The College Board just announced that they will now be allowing test-takers to take their CLEP exams at home. If you've ever had issues with finding a test center or scheduling an exam, College Board's new remote option may be right for you. 

Here are a few things to keep in mind before your remote test date: 

About At-Home CLEP Exams

Don't think taking your CLEP exam at home will be less rigorous. There isn't much difference between a CLEP exam at a test center and your exam at home. Your at-home exam will have the same content, timing, format, and overall on-screen experience as a test center exam. You'll even have a human proctor, thanks to technology provided by Proctortrack. 

CLEP and Proctortrack

Proctortrack is the company CLEP uses to verify your identity online. Not only that, Proctortrack enables your human proctor to monitor you via video while you take your exam. 

To take your at-home exam, you'll need a PC (not Mac), speaker, microphone, and webcam. If you're taking notes, you'd need either a whiteboard with a dry erase marker or a sheet of paper in a transparent sheet protector. You also need a quiet, private, and secure testing environment (so bookstores or coffee shops are out). Proctortrack has additional requirements. You can read the complete list here. Who Can Take a Remote Proctored Exam?

Not everyone is eligible for an at-home CLEP exam. 

First, you have to be 13 years old or older to register. Then, you must reside in the U.S. (not including territories) or be DANTES-funded.* Additionally, your computer and testing environment must meet the technical and Proctortrack requirements. 

Remember, you still have the option of taking your CLEP exam at a test center if remote proctoring isn't right for you. You can search for a test center here. 

Disabilities and Taking At-Home CLEP Exam

If you have a disability and are planning to take your CLEP exam at home, the College Board offers several forms of accommodation, including: 

• Extended exam time
• Screen magnification
• Modifiable screen colors
• Longer rest breaks

You're also allowed food, drink, and medication with the catch that you stay in the view of the proctor. You should submit your request for accommodation two months before your exam and before you register. Until the College Board approves your request, you won't be able to complete your exam remotely with accommodation. 

How to Register for Your At-Home Exam 

If you prep for your exam with Achieve we'll walk you through the registration process, which happens in six steps: 

1. First, go to the Register for CLEP Exams page and find the exam you want to take. 
2. Sign in to your College Board account (or create one). Be sure that the information you use to create your account matches the information on your ID. You won't be able to take your exam unless it does. 
3. Choose your test center by selecting 'at home with remote proctoring.' You will be asked if you need accommodation. As mentioned previously, be sure to submit your request for accommodations two months before your exam and before you register. 
4. Check out. Be sure that all of the information that you submitted is correct. In addition to the CLEP exam fee, there's a $30 charge for remote proctoring. If you prep with Achieve and meet specific requirements, we'll cover your exam and proctoring fee.**
5. Schedule Your Exam. Within 24 hours, you should receive an email confirmation from CLEP with a Ticket ID and a link to the Proctortrack website. You'll use your Ticket ID and create a Proctortrack account and schedule your remote-proctored exam appointment. 

CLEP Exams and Refunds

If you didn't use an Achieve voucher to pay for your exam and fees, you might be eligible for a refund. The proctoring and CLEP exam fees are refundable up to a week after purchase (unless already redeemed). After one week, the College Board does not offer refunds.
