Do you feel like you’ve advanced as far as you can, given your current education? Do you feel like a bachelor’s degree will be right for you? If so, there’s a lot of research to be done to find the right program. Would an accelerated bachelor’s degree option be a good fit for you? And don’t forget the question that most affects a college education – can you find a college option that you can afford?
If you are currently employed, that situation needs to be addressed as well. What is the best way to tell your employer you are wanting to seek a bachelor’s degree? Would an accelerated bachelor’s degree program allow you to continue working?
Let’s take a look at how you might answer these questions.
How to Tell Your Boss
First of all, you want to be professional about it. Do not text and do not wait for someone else at work to leak the information to your employer. Make an appointment to discuss the situation with your boss.
Don’t wait till the last minute. If you are not going to be able to continue at your present position, your employer needs time to find a replacement. If you give your boss enough time, he may be able to come up with an arrangement that allows you flexibility to stay on the job in some fashion.
Do prepare for the meeting. Be ready to explain the advantages your bachelor’s degree will afford – especially if you intend to remain with your employer. Tell your employer about the added skills you will be able to bring to the table. Be sure to explain how it will benefit the bottom line for your employer – an educated, prepared employee will be a more efficient and productive employee.
Be ready to discuss HR and employee benefits. It could be that your employer has programs that help employees go back to school. Often, there are conditions for those programs. For instance, the bachelor’s degree may need to be related to your current employment, or the company may expect a set number of years of employment with them after you get your degree. If you intend to stay with your employer during or after obtaining your degree, these conditions may have no bearing. They are something to be aware of, however. Sometimes a leave of absence may be an option. You may be able to continue insurance at a discounted rate, or have your previous years of service count towards benefits like vacation. Find out what can carry over if you return.
Do get any agreements in writing. If you will need to resign, be sure to write a letter of resignation that explains all the reasons you are leaving, and what you’ve learned from your employment with the company. Never burn bridges. You never know when you might need a reference, or when or where you might cross paths with the company in the future.
An Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Program Makes College More Affordable
Credit-by-exam is a way to save you more time and money on your education than you would otherwise with traditional methods. Rather than take an entire semester of a course – and all the assignments and quizzes associated with it – you can take one exam and receive the same amount of credit. Achieve Test Prep gives you options when it comes to credit-by-exam. We evaluate your situation, and, discover what previous credits and work experience can be transferred to the school of your choice. We find out what courses the school allows testing out of for the degree you are seeking. We then prepare you to take and pass those exams. We are all about options. You can take the prep classes at one of our many campuses nationwide, or you can take them online in our virtual classroom, giving you the same quality instruction from live instructors – only from the convenience of your own home. You have flexibility when scheduling courses. We offer courses night and day, and on weekends, so you can fit your education around your work and family obligations. Achieve’s credit-by-exam program is designed to make college more affordable and allow you to fit getting a bachelor’s degree into your schedule – whether you continue to work while getting your degree or not.
