An Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Online: Bad for Your Health?

Seems to be almost daily that there is a health scare or health alert headline – some false, some overblown, while others are truly harmful. There is growing evidence that all that time spent sitting at the computer pursuing that accelerated bachelor’s degree online may be seriously unhealthy. Estimates are that more than half the average person’s waking hours are spent sitting – watching television, commuting, at the computer, or similar inactivity. If you are online pursuing an accelerated degree, you are more than likely far above that average. Study after study shows that prolonged periods of sitting create a higher risk of dying from all causes, even in those who exercise regularly.

Does this mean you should give up trying to get an accelerated bachelor’s degree online? Of course it doesn’t. What it does mean, however, is that you should be aware of the problems extended periods of sitting in front of the computer can cause, and steps to take to avoid those problems.

Problems Yes, But There Are Solutions

Disease Risks

Problem - Extended sitting causes poor circulation and less activity means fewer calories burned. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and even cancer are all far more prevalent than normal as a result.
SOLUTION – Take frequent breaks – at least once an hour. Set a timer if you need the reminder. Get up on your breaks. Stretch and walk around. Stand while making phone calls. If possible, consider a standing desk. Drink lots of water – it’s healthy and it will necessitate more frequent breaks. Meditate, take a yoga break, or exercise before and after a computer session to relieve tension.

Poor Posture

Problem - Sitting puts pressure on the spine, which forces the head and shoulder to lean forward to compensate. This posture can result in back, shoulder, and neck pain – often chronic – as well as increased stress and tension headaches.
SOLUTION – As above, stand and stretch periodically. Look into an ergonomic chair. Position the monitor properly – top edge eye level, arms-length away, tilted slightly back. A recent innovation is motion seating that allows you to move and burn calories while you sit. Swopper and muvman chairs are examples of this.

Eyestrains and Headaches from Computer Glare

Problem - While the symptoms are usually not permanent, blurred vision, burning and tearing eyes, and headaches can all result from prolonged staring at the computer screen.
SOLUTION – Eye specialists suggest using eye drops and using the 20-20-20 rule – that is, after 20 minutes of staring at a monitor, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a chance to rest and refocus. Place the monitor approximately an arm’s length away for proper focusing while reading. If possible, avoid fluorescent lighting in favor of incandescent or halogen lighting from lamps.

Repetitive Strain Injury

Problem - This damage to the nerves and tendons in the hands most often results in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which can lead to long-term nerve damage if not corrected.
SOLUTION – Proper posture that reduces strain on wrists and keeping arms relaxed helps prevent RSI. Don’t use excessive force when using the mouse or keyboard. Keep hands warm. Take breaks and stretch.
