A degree in business could be a wise investment. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) surveyed employers asking what college degrees they seek for their hires. The top of the list was engineering. Second was business majors, with 68% saying they’d hire from that field. Business majors can also expect good pay, as those in the field earn the fourth-highest average starting salaries among college graduates. Positions will be available because every industry has to utilize basic business principles to be successful.
Even wiser, an accelerated business degree will save you money and get you out in the marketplace competing for those positions sooner than your peers using traditional methods. Passing a CLEP exam allows you to test out of the equivalent college course. Let’s learn about the five business specific exams CLEP offers.
CLEP Courses Offered for Business Major Acceleration
Business majors are in demand because they are trained to organize, plan, and manage. Every industry needs people who understand basic business principles to be successful. The CLEP exams were designed to make sure the student has that knowledge by offering the following courses for credit-by-exam:
- Financial Accounting – This exam is the equivalent of an undergraduate accounting class. You’ll need to be familiar with basic concepts and terminology. The majority of the questions deal with the basics of the balance sheet – including valuation, depreciation, intangible assets, stocks, and accounts.
- Information Systems – This used to be called Information Systems and Computer Applications. The questions include topics covering the use of the Internet, applications such as e-commerce and CRMs, networking and telecommunications, basic database concepts, and social issues relating to technology.
- Introductory Business Law – This exam deals with contracts, legal procedures, law dealing with employment, and more. About 70% of the questions deal with basic facts and concepts, and 30% deal with the ability to solve specific case problems.
- Principles of Management – Much of this exam requires a knowledge of human resources principles, and the understanding and application of management terminology. Question topics include strategic planning, decision making, organizational structure and charts, performance appraisal, budgeting, and international management issues.
- Principles of Marketing – This exam covers a wide range of marketing topics including ethics, market research, non-profit, the role of marketing in society, and international marketing issues. Consumer and business-to-business targets are covered, as well as the use of distribution channels and e-commerce.
